Although The Queers have been hit or miss from me since they started, there’s almost always something about their records that hits me right. I usually enjoy their songs that venture into harder Ramones territory, but I’ve never been huge on the saccharine sweet love songs. Their latest, Munki Brain, spends most of its time in the sappy area, venturing out just a little into the slightly more rockin’ tunes that usually get my interest. "Houston, We Have a Problem", "I Don’t Get It", and a decent cover of The Jams’ "Girl About Town" are the few standouts from this overall sugary collection. The thing that really kills this CD for me is the lack of wordplay fun that used to show up with Queers material, even if the music got sweet and poppy. There really isn’t much here that goes into the childish category that made them endearing to some people, myself included. Even if an album wasn’t great, there was always one song stupid enough to make me chuckle. Unfortunately, there just isn’t much here that made me even crack a smile.
