Only Crime – Virulence

Fat Wreck Chords

The followup to 2004’s "To The Nines", the latest from "supergroup" Only Crime has a bite of pop to it, but they still put most modern punk bands to shame. With a lineup that includes drummer Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, Descendents), vocalist Russ Rankin (Good Riddance) and members of Hagfish, Gwar, Converge and more, this is a solid group of players and they sound it. The opening track, "Take Me", starts off sounding like Black Flag’s "Slip It In" before the chorus hits and all thoughts of the record being an 80’s flashback disappear. This is a current record and it shows in both the production and the ability for this to get "indy" radio play, where I’m sure it will do just fine. The Descendents were poppy and still managed to appeal to people who liked Discharge, so saying this is too mainstream isn’t really an argument. If you dig your rock with catchy hooks then give this a shot. It’s not album of the year, but it’s a good time all the same.
