Top 10 Clash Songs

I am giving my list of the top 10 all-time best Clash songs. I could’ve very easily turned this into a top 50, but I wanted to keep this short and sweet. Don’t agree? Give me your top ten. Or better yet, what’s your top 5 favorite tracks from The Beatles White Album?

9. Janie Jones (The Clash)
8. Career Opportunities (The Clash)
7. London Calling (London Calling)
6. Clampdown (London Calling)

theonlytruepunk – I thought you turned on me too!

I like your list. It’s hard to narrow it down to ten. – Mike E.

Damn Mike, like your list and TOTP’s list as well. Bankrobber was always my tune. Even though I never robbed banks, during my criminal days that tune was my anthem. Funny, I don’t have one piece of vinyl by these guys, everything is on tape or the hard drive. Must remedy that.
    1. Dear Prudence (although I like Siouxsie’s version better)
    2. I’m So tired
    3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    4. Happines Is A Warm Gun
    5. Julia

justin – Thanks for writing in. My first piece of Clash vinyl was a bootleg I bought of theirs at the old Capitol Records swap meet. It was set-up in the Capitol Records parking lot. Once a month on Saturdays (I think). And they mainly had bootlegs, I found this one with all kinds of outtakes, and unreleased tunes. And I played the hell out of it, before discovering Black Flag. – Mike E.

I want…and I need…Animal. Def Leppard were so great…at absolutely nothing. Lyrically and musically lame. The drummer played the same with one arm, as he did with two…he still sucked!

    Mike E. Says:

I must be shorter than I thought, because this crap just went right over my head.

That Jim guy loves Def Leppard and I was letting him know how lame the band was/is…the worst.

    Hi Mike,

I often check the site (which I like a lot) but never get around to commenting. Probably a lot of people do the same (no excuses). Here’s my list:

    1. Stay Free
2.All The Young Punks (New Boots & Contracts)
    3.(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais
    4.Bankrobber
    5.Remote Control
    6.Jail Guitar Doors
    7.Complete Control
    8.Last Gang In Town
    9.City Of The Dead
    10. Tommy Gun /1-2 Crush On You, 45

(Glad to see 1-2 Crush On You in the other lists. Had the Tommy Gun single for my 14th birthday in November 1978, been playing it ever since…).

    Most over-rated song: London Calling
Most over-rated album: London Calling. (From the way people talk about it now you’d think everyone loved it in the day. Here in England, everyone didn’t… most thought it a bit weak & patchy, but with some classics… I didn’t listen to it properly for years – I was put off by the opening few songs, which I am lukewarm about to this day…)
Most under-rated album: Give’ Em Enough Rope
Best album: Give’ Em Enough Rope
    Worst album: Combat Rock
Album that shouldn’t have been called a Clash album: Cut the Crap (This is England is pretty decent tho’)

How about a Damned top 10, a US hardcore top 10, & a B-movie top 10?… Now I’ve broken the ice I need to comment again. By the way I really enjoy your personal punk rock stories from “the day”. Cheers from London!

Guillermo & James – Thanks a million for writing in. James, you’ve given me a bunch of new ideas for future articles. Of all the Clash songs Bankrobber seems to be the only one that pretty much everyone agrees on. – Mike E.
