Coop of White Flag Down – Interview

24 Feb

I first heard about White Flag Down back in 2010, and finally tracked their album down from Interpunk Direct in 2011.

Coop and his band, White Flag Down, have found a way to not only play great music, but they have also brought back a, sort of, purity back to punk rock. Their music is raw and not over-produced. Though they are still, somewhat, underground, in 2012 they have been off to a great start. And if the punk gods are smiling down, you’ll be hearing them in your neck of the woods soon.

1. First off, I want to thank you for agreeing to do this interview. Please give everybody reading a little history on White Flag Down.

We are a Punk/Oi! Band from L.A.!

2. How long has White Flag Down been together?

I think we’ve been together five years or so.

3. Take us through the process you and White Flag Down uses to write your material. Does it come from a lyric or a riff?

I write all the lyrics, and let the guys know what kind of song it’ll be . . . ANGRY!!! Hahahaa

4. How much of a part do you play in the musical direction of White Flag Down?

Almost all, I started the band, I picked these guys ‘cause they are the best . . . it’s my baby.

5. This isn’t meant to be a snarky question, but with any Oi or skinhead band it’s always assumed that there has to be a racist undertone to them, so I ask is White Flag Down a racist band?

WFD is not a racist band plan and simple . . But we have heard that Oi! Bands always have

6. Give us the background behind recording the Malcontent Killing Machine album.

Jack Daniel’s, beer and four hours = done.

7. When did you start singing?

I started my first band in 90, always loved singing.

8. One of the best songs off of Malcontent Killing Machine is Easy Is Her Name. What’s the story behind this song?

It’s about those Hollywood girls we all love to hate so much, they are a blast!!!

9. Who were/ are your influences, musically, and personally?

I just love punk and Oi. Collin from Cock Sparrer and Jonathan Christ – Code of Honor – amazing writers.

10. I hope this isn’t too far out, here’s a bit of self-analysis. You’ve been in the music world for a bit as a vocalist, and writer, so the question is what does Sean Cooper bring to a band?

I bring power! I believe in my songs and band needed more Bon Scott on stage.

11. How much of a part do you play in the visual direction of the band, and the art direction?

We all offer our pieces. It’s a mixture. But the Clockwork and skinhead . . . me.

12. Other than being in the band you are in, give us some of your best punk rock memories.

I hung out and talked to Jonathan Christ one night before he died. Great writer!! But punk has been great for me . . . I love it all!!!

13. What current projects are you working on?

Time travel, ha ha ha!!! We are working on a new record, out soon.

14. Where can people order White Flag Down merchandise, T-shirts, and posters?

We suck at this whole internet thing. You can get them at shows.

15. Of the recordings you’ve done, what slab of vinyl (or CD for the younger fans) are you most proud of, or best represents your skills?

I’m still waiting.

16. Do you remember when you realized that punk was going to be a part of your life forever?

1984, first bondage belt . . . that was it.

17. What was your first exposure to punk rock?

I saw it in an article in Rolling Stone . . . it was how I felt.

18. Who are you listening to now?

This second . . . Dwight Yoakam.

19. Which artist, band concert and/or show had the most impact on your life?

Man . . . I don’t know. I love Bon Scott!!

20. Our last question, rather than complain about the current state of punk rock, my question to you is: do you find it strange or maybe amusing how incredibly accepted punk is now?

You make my brain hurt!!!!
