My Top 5 Photographers

My Top 5 Photographers

Number 5
Al Flipside
What can I say about Al? Without him I would have been lost. Before the web, I had Flipside. That was my Bible for years, his photos, interviews and reviews made my life complete. www.flipsidefanzine.com

Number 4
Alison Braun (Mouse)
I met her once, through a friend. She was the subject of many crazy Flipside letters, but produced a huge amount of great images for Flipside, and that crappy ‘zine Maximum Rock & Roll. She once dated a friend of mine, and took all the pictures for his first band, BCU. www.alisonbraun.com

Number 3
Jennifer Finch (of L7)
Check out her website (www.jenniferfinch.com). I didn’t know she was a photographer until a couple of years ago, but she’s captured the early scene perfectly.

Number 2
Glen Friedman
Before I really understood what punk was Glen did amazing photo layouts of the Dogtown guys, the early punk feel was there. I wanted to be Tony Alva. Then later his punk photos captured another side of L.A. Great stuff.

Number 1
Ed Colver
What can you say about Ed Colver? If you could get photographed by him, you were big-time. You were a definite punk rock star. His famous shot of the stage-diver at the Wasted Youth show is legendary. www.edwardcolver.com
Honorable mentions: Jenny Lens (http://jennylens.com), and many more.

LAST ONE TO DIE is officially out. Order at: https://www.createspace.com/3669330.

June 17th, 2012 at 9:53 amI think before you wrote this I could only think of three punk photographers, thanx for sharing those. Not to nit pick you bro but the caption sez “top 10″, but you list 5….hahaha. Hope all is swell with you man, I owe you a phone call, some catchin up might be in order.
June 19th, 2012 at 12:21 amGood catch Justin. Sometimes the mind is just gone. Thanks for writing in!
June 19th, 2012 at 12:20 pmI know she gets a lot of grief (some deserved, some not), but Jenny Lens took some iconic photos. I’d really put her in my Top 5.
Ann Summa and Theresa Kereakes did great work. F-Stop Fitzgerald up in the Bay Area. The photographers list in the back of “Hardcore California” is a good place to start for the documentation of the California punk scene.
June 19th, 2012 at 4:47 pmTom – some great additions. Maybe I’ll add them next time.
