Top 10 Comments

I’ve been doing the Mike Check column here on Strange Reaction for a little over five years, and I got to talking to my Wife the other day, and I mentioned all the lovely hate mail I received a few weeks back. And then we talked about some of my favorite comments too. So, she suggested I do a column comments, and emails I received based on my articles. And to be fair I included one comment my Wife’s column got. Enjoy!

In June of 2007 I wrote a review of a Secret Affair show I had gone to and how hostile the crowd was. I was jazzed to get a comment from guitarist Dave Cairns.

10. Dave Cairns Says:

Just came across this site & couldn’t help laughing at the memory of being in Secret Affair and being booked to support Edgar Winter…if you think that gig was bad, some of the gigs with Edgar in Texas were pretty scary…..I remember playing Lubbock and being asked by several rednecks if we were from Russia….
You can buy all of our three albums by the way just about anywhere & there is also an Anthology CD on Castle Music & a live DVD entitled ‘Live @ The Scala….
Cheers,
Dave Cairns

This is a comment I received from long time friend of Strange Reaction theonlytruepunk. It was in regards to my old friend Wayne.

9. theonlytruepunk Says:

Wow! That is one gut-wrenching story. Wayne thought you just walked away from him…?? How fucking sad. That guy sounds really cool!! It is awesome to hear he is doing great too. That is truly a sad story with a happy ending. Cobra Skulls suck ass!! Hahahahahaha…seeing them Tuesday.

This comment came from Hudley Flipside, in response to an article my Wife wrote. I was digging it, because if you’re from L.A. and were a punk Al and Hud were kind punk royalty. But I later complained, “Hud never commented on my stuff.”

8. Hudley Flipside Says:

Nice story , I love biographical perspectives. Punks, as all of us, wear masks. In general I think it is hard to be yourself and show who you really are to the world. The authentic self! Yet, children, for a time, do express their real self… to us and the world. I think when they sit down and the reality of the real world sinks in… this is when identity and ego and all of those psychological terms come in to play. For me, it is like the American Indianans, I pull upon me, my reflective self, all the things that inspire me… this is what I project to the world… for me it is the praying mantis… Nice kid…I have two boys….

xx

Back in 2008 I started mentioning that I was putting together a show (L.A. Punk Con), and I mentioned I was asking people to attend. Anyway, I contacted Mike Ness and received a form letter back from his management stating that Mr. Ness is far too busy to be involved with this. I received this email shortly afterwards. It cracked me up, because I have spent about a year trying to complete an interview with Rikk Agnew. He’s an incredible musician, but hard as hell to pin down. I never stated that I hadn’t included him.

7. Sarah Says:
I am quite surprised that you haven’t included Rikk Agnew in your important people of American Punk Rock. Rikk was just the first punk musician to have a solo album ( just ask Lisa of Frontier). Hell, you will probably ask Rikk’s former bands to play but not Rikk. I think it’s a travesty. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your time.

Sarah

I love this! My first bits of hate mail from the Top 10 Groups That Caused Punk article.

6. Josh Says:

To the writer of this article, You’re a fucking idiot bud.

I wrote an article in August of 2008 about my first leather jacket. And I received this comment, and I dug it because it was, I think, my first comment from out of the country. But again the experience was the same.

5. John Says:

Hate to hear about your jacket. My mom bought me one when I was in high school and I’m still wearing it 20+ years later. My next-door neighbors went to New York a few months ago and they brought one back for my little boy. He’s only 2 1/2 but gets so excited that he can look daddy and his mates. Love your stories. Keep up the great work.

I received this comment from my old friend Matt the vocalist of Earth Dies Burning. We hadn’t talked since . . . 1984 or maybe 1985.

4. Matt Karlsen Says:

Unbelievably clear memory for something that happened 23 years ago. I have enough trouble remembering things that happened last week?
Who are you?

I love this! How do you come up with this, genius!

3. c mchale Says (In regards to the Top 10 Bands That Caused Punk article):

I’m afraid to ask, but did you exclude the Bee Gees because you secretly LIKE high girly vocal parts sung by guys?

I love this one too! Fucking great!

2. Chris Says (In regards to the Top 10 Bands That Caused Punk article):

Glenn Danzig wouldn’t exist if Jim Morrison hadn’t.

What can I say about this?

1. The Racing Rabbit Says (In regards to the Top 10 Bands That Caused Punk article):

Without the Beatles the Sex Pistols wouldn’t have existed.
